A [high bounce rate](https://measuremy.site/blog/what-is-bounce-rate) is not always bad. A contact page or a reference page can have a high [bounce rate](https://measuremy.site/blog/what-is-a-bounce-rate-and-what-is-a-good-one) because the visitor got the answer and left. On landing pages, product pages, and content that should lead somewhere, a high bounce rate often means the page is not doing its job. Work through the causes below and fix the ones that apply to your page.

## 1. Slow page load

If a page takes several seconds to appear, visitors leave before it loads. This is more visible on mobile and slower connections. Check page timing in your browser's network panel or a page speed tool. Look for large uncompressed images, render-blocking scripts, and too many third-party scripts.

Fixes:

- Compress images and serve appropriately sized versions.
- Defer non-critical scripts where possible.
- Remove unused third-party embeds.
- Cache static assets.

## 2. Mismatched search intent

A visitor clicks a result expecting one thing and sees another. The page may rank for a query it only partially answers. The bounce rate then reflects a mismatch between the link and the content.

Fixes:

- Make the headline and meta description match the page content.
- Check which search queries bring people to the page and whether the page answers them.
- If the page cannot answer a query, update the content or target a different phrase.
- Do not stuff unrelated keywords into a page.

## 3. No clear next step

Some pages answer a question completely. If there is no reason to click again, the visitor leaves. That is fine for a reference page. It is a problem if you need the visitor to read another article, sign up, or buy.

Fixes:

- Add one clear next action near the end of the page.
- Link to a closely related guide or product page.
- Add inline links where they genuinely help.
- Avoid adding five competing calls to action.

## 4. Poor mobile experience

A page that is hard to read on a phone will produce a high bounce rate even if the desktop version works well. Small text, buttons too close together, horizontal scrolling, and fixed desktop layouts all hurt mobile visitors.

Fixes:

- Use a responsive layout.
- Keep font sizes readable without zooming.
- Make tap targets large enough.
- Test the page on a real phone, not only in a desktop browser.

## 5. Intrusive overlays and popups

A full-screen email capture or a chat widget that covers the content can push visitors away before they read anything. Popups are not automatically bad, but they should not block the reason the visitor came.

Fixes:

- Delay popups until the visitor has scrolled or spent time on the page.
- Use dismissible overlays rather than ones that are hard to close.
- Keep the main content readable on load.
- Test whether removing the overlay changes bounce rate before deciding to keep it.

## 6. Hard-to-read page design

Visitors bounce when they cannot quickly tell what the page is about or when the layout feels cluttered. Autoplaying video, moving backgrounds, low-contrast text, and dense paragraphs all make a page harder to use.

Fixes:

- Put the main point near the top.
- Use clear headings and short paragraphs.
- Increase contrast between text and background.
- Remove decorative movement that distracts from the content.

## 7. Shallow or skimmable content

A page that looks substantial but gives no useful detail can cause a quick exit. Visitors often scan first, then read only if the page looks specific and relevant. Thin content also tends to attract broader or less relevant traffic.

Fixes:

- Answer the main question early.
- Use examples, specific numbers, and step-by-step explanations where relevant.
- Break text with headings and bullet lists.
- Cut paragraphs that restate the obvious.

## 8. Engagement is not being measured

A high bounce rate can be a measurement problem. If your analytics only counts a second pageview, a visitor who reads for five minutes and then leaves still looks like a bounce. The page may be performing well, but the metric is too narrow. This is common on single-page sites, landing pages, and long-form content.

Fixes:

- Track meaningful actions such as button clicks, file downloads, video plays, or form submissions.
- Measure scroll depth if reading is the goal.
- Compare pages that have similar traffic but different layouts or calls to action.
- If you use [measuremy.site](https://measuremy.site/blog/analytics-for-next-js-apps), track a button click with a data attribute instead of treating pageviews as the only engagement signal.

Then wait a few days and compare pages with similar traffic. If one page has a lower bounce rate after a change, roll that change out to other pages. A single sitewide bounce rate is too broad to act on.

## How to work through the list

Start with the pages that matter most: pages that should lead to signups, sales, or another reading step. Pull up those pages and ask whether the page is slow, misleading, hard to use, or missing a next step. Fix one thing at a time so you can tell what changed.

Use a simple checklist:

- Does the page load quickly on mobile?
- Does the headline match the link or search result?
- Is there one obvious next step?
- Is the text easy to scan?
- Does the page answer the question it promises to answer?
- Are overlays blocking the content?

If the answer to any of these is no, fix that before you spend time on smaller layout tweaks. High bounce rate is usually a symptom of a page-level problem, not a sitewide disease.

After each change, give the page enough traffic to be meaningful. A page with 50 visits a week can swing wildly from week to week. Compare the same page before and after a specific change, and look at whether the actions you care about improve, not just the bounce rate. That tells you whether the page is doing its job.
