# How to ask your coding agent about your analytics

If you already use a coding agent such as [Claude Code](https://measuremy.site/guides/claude-code-analytics), Cursor, or Codex, you can ask it about your website analytics instead of clicking through dashboards. The agent can pull visitor counts, compare periods, build a funnel, and turn a vague concern into a specific answer. The useful approach is to ask for facts, not for a general opinion, and to give the agent access through MCP once.

## Give the agent access once

Before you can ask questions, the agent needs a way to read your analytics. If your analytics tool has an [MCP server](https://measuremy.site/guides/analytics-mcp-server), add it to your coding agent. The setup usually means:

- running the agent's server-add command once,
- signing in through your browser,
- restarting the agent so it loads the new tools,
- asking the agent to confirm which sites it can see.

For measuremy.site, this is a hosted cookieless tracker with an [MCP server](https://measuremy.site/blog/what-is-an-mcp-server). You add one script tag to your site, and your coding agent can read the dashboard data, create funnels, and create tracked links. The MCP connection uses OAuth, so you do not paste an API key into your project.

## Ask for one number at a time

A coding agent handles specific requests better than broad ones. Instead of asking "how is my site doing?", ask for a single metric, a period, and a site.

- How many visitors did example.com get last week?
- Which page had the biggest drop in visitors over the past 7 days?
- How many visitors came from the newsletter campaign last Tuesday?
- What were the top three traffic sources for the blog in March?
- How many signup button clicks did the pricing page get this week?

A prompt like this works well:

```
How many visitors did example.com get last week, and how does that compare with the week before?
```

## Ask for comparisons and causes

When a number looks unusual, ask the agent to compare periods and check likely sources.

- Compare this Monday with the previous four Mondays and show the biggest source change.
- Which country dropped the most after the launch announcement?
- Did the traffic spike on Wednesday come from a specific referrer or campaign?

Some analytics tools detect [traffic spikes](https://measuremy.site/guides/find-why-traffic-spiked) and explain likely causes. If yours does, ask the agent to read that explanation. This can save you from guessing whether a change came from a campaign, a broken link, or a social post.

## Turn a question into a funnel

Instead of asking only for pageviews, ask the agent to connect the steps people should take. A useful prompt might be:

```
Create a funnel from /pricing to /checkout and show the drop-off at each step.
```

If your analytics tracks custom events, include those too.

- Add the signup click event before the checkout step.
- Show the funnel for the launch page, the demo request event, and the thank-you page.
- Compare the pricing-to-checkout funnel for organic visitors and paid visitors.

Asking for the drop-off at each step usually gives you more useful information than asking for a single conversion rate.

## Ask for tracked links before a campaign

A coding agent can create campaign links if your analytics supports it through MCP. Ask for the link before you send a newsletter or launch a post.

```
Create a tracked link for the launch email using example.com/launch, source newsletter, medium email, and campaign april-launch.
```

Then ask later:

- How many visitors came from the april-launch campaign?
- How many of those visitors reached the signup page?
- Which campaign link produced the most signups last month?

This keeps campaign questions close to the place where you already plan and ship work.

## Keep prompts small and repeatable

If you ask for too much in one prompt, the agent may return a wall of numbers. Break it into steps.

- First ask for the main traffic number.
- Then ask for the biggest source or page change.
- Then ask for a funnel or campaign result.

Once you find a useful question, keep it in a notes file and paste it again each week. If your coding agent supports scheduled or repeated tasks, you can ask it to run the check on a schedule. A repeatable prompt might be:

```
Every Monday, show me the top three pages, the biggest traffic change, and the signup count for the previous week.
```

## Use the agent to check tracking setup

You can also ask the agent to check whether a page has the analytics script or whether a button has the event attribute. Because the agent can read your project files, it can answer setup questions quickly.

- Check if the blog posts have the analytics script in the template.
- Find all buttons that should have the signup click event and tell me which are missing it.
- Confirm that the campaign links in the launch email use the same UTM naming pattern.

This can catch tracking gaps before a campaign goes out.

## Keep privacy and data retention in mind

If you use a [cookieless analytics](https://measuremy.site/guides/cookieless-analytics) tool, the agent sees aggregate counts rather than personal data. That fits a small site that wants basic traffic answers without a cookie banner. Before asking an agent to read analytics, check that the tool's data access matches your own privacy position. If you are unsure about data sharing or legal requirements, check your own legal position.

measuremy.site sets no cookies and stores no personal data, so the agent can read visitor, page, source, country, browser, and system counts without pulling in personal records. That keeps the questions focused on what changed and what to do next.

The goal is not to replace dashboards completely. It is to let your coding agent answer the same questions you would otherwise dig for, in the same place where you already build and ship. Start with one specific question after connecting the MCP server, then add funnels and tracked links as you trust the answers.
